If you are a senior citizen, age 65 or older and live more than 1/4 mile from our public fixed route, Shared Ride may be an option for you. Shared Ride serves many seniors throughout Monroe County who live in outerlying areas or travel to areas where public transit is not accessible.

About the Senior Shared Ride Program

If you are a senior citizen, age 65 or older and live more than 1/4 mile from our public fixed route, Shared Ride may be an option for you. Shared Ride serves many seniors throughout Monroe County who live in outerlying areas or travel to areas where public transit is not accessible.

To ride on the Senior Lottery program, passengers must first be enrolled in our program. Once enrolled, Shared Ride operates on a reservation basis.

Same Day service may be requested, but not guaranteed. Trips outside of hours of service may be provided based on medical or work related trip purposes and seat availability.

Fare Structure

Funding for this program is provided through the Pennsylvania State Lottery and the Monroe County Office on Aging. This program significantly reduces the cost of transportation for seniors living in rural areas through out Monroe County.

Subsidized Fares for persons registered with the Shared Ride Senior Program can be found to the left of this section.

Paying the Fare on the Bus

When traveling on the Senior Lottery Shared Ride Program, the fare for each trip is due at the time of boarding. Please have the exact fare available for the bus driver, as they do not make change. Do not provide the bus driver the fare for all the trips you plan on taking for the day, as you may have another driver and bus for your return trip.

How to Enroll

The system will alert you to which programs you may be eligible for, provide a secure connection to upload documents, and submit the enrollments to the proper program.

To enroll in the Shared Ride Program using paper, pen, and postage stamps, you may call our office at 570 839-6282 x 437 to request an application, or you may download it from this page. Please return your completed and signed application to:

Because this program is designated for seniors age 65 and older, proof of age is required. The following documents are acceptable means of age verification:

Armed Forces Discharge/Separation Papers
Baptismal Certificate
Birth Certificate
PACE Identification Card
Passport/Naturalization Papers
Pennsylvania Photo Identification Card
Motor Vehicle Operator's License (Driver’s License)
U.S. Social Security Administration statement of age
Resident Alien Card

Please choose one of the age verifications listed and attach a photo copy to your application. Your application can not be processed without verification of your age. Applications are normally processed within 72 hours from the point we receive it.

Once registered, reservations can be made by noon the business day prior and 14 business days prior to service.

About the Persons with Disabilities Program

The Rural Transportation for Persons with Disabilities Program is a transportation service that reduces the fare for eligible persons with disabilities lending affordable and accessible transportation. Persons with disabilities between the ages of 18 and 64 may travel anywhere in Monroe County with this program. If you live or travel within 3/4 of a mile from any MCTA fixed route, you will be required to use our ADA Fixed Route Program.

The program can be used for various purposes such as medical appointments, shopping and employment to name a few. Some exclusions do apply, where PennDOT has determined that other transportation funding exists.

Same Day service may be requested, but not guaranteed. Trips outside of hours of service may be provided based on medical or work related trip purposes and seat availability.

To be eligible for this program, MCTA must be provided verification of a disability. In addition, MCTA must determine age verification. One of the following documents required: Driver’s License/State Photo ID, Birth Certificate (MUST HAVE SEAL), Passport/Naturalization Papers, Armed Forces Discharge Papers, Veteran’s ID Card (Must Show DOB on Card), Resident Alien Card.

Upon receipt of your application and written evidence of disability, you will be notified within 15 business days of your eligibility for the PWD and any other possible funding sources available to you for transportation purposes.

Once enrolled, you may call our dispatch office at 570 839-6282 x 1 to schedule your ride. Reservations are taken no less than 2 business days prior to service but can be made up to two weeks in advance. For questions regarding times and scheduling, please phone dispatch at (570) 839-6282 x 1.

About the MATP Program

MATP - Medical Assistance Transportation Program is a transportation service funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. Consumers with Medical Assistance are eligible to receive transportation to medical appointments and services covered by Medical Assistance.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for transportation services under MATP, you must be enrolled in one of the following plans:

Access
Amerihealth Northeast
Coventry
Geisinger

Services Provided

MCTA staff will work with the passenger to determine the most cost effective and appropriate transportation option for the individual. These services include:

Fixed Route ServiceAvailable Monday through Saturday, but some routes have limited service. Please check our Fixed Route part of the website for more information.
Mileage ReimbursementAvailable to consumers who have access to a car. MCTA will reimburse the customer $.25 per mile for each eligible trip. Click here to download form.
Shared Ride ServiceAvailable to qualified individuals who live 3/4 mile or more away from the fixed route. In limited circumstances, it also provides service to regions out of county and beyond.

Care Connects Program presented by Sanofi

About the Care Connects Program

The Care Connects medical transportation program is funded through a grant from Sanofi, in cooperation with the Pocono Mountains United Way. This program, starting October 2, 2023, is available to any resident who is not eligible for any other MCTA shared ride program and must go to a medical appointment or a pharmacy. All appointments must start from and end at locations in Monroe County.

Eligibility Requirements

None. However, participants must not be eligible for any other subsidized program.

MCTA staff will work with the passenger to determine the most cost effective and appropriate transportation option for the individual. These services include:

General Public Shared Ride Service

About Public Shared Ride

Shared Ride (paratransit) services are available to any registered user. Registration and use is open to the public for this Shared Ride program. However, programs are available to select populations who meet specific guidelines. These programs reduce the cost of the fare they may have to pay. For customers who do not qualify for special programs, they will be required to pay the full fare, which is based on a distance traveled basis.

If you are unable to get eligibilty for any of these programs, you will be required to pay the full fare. The table to the right breaks out the cost:
